To close its 2023-24 season, Las Cruces Community Theatre opens a three-weekend run of the musical comedy “Sister Act: A Divine Comedy” on Friday night.

With book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, lyrics by Glenn Slater and music by Alan Menken, the musical premiered in California in 2006 and opened in London in 2009 before making its way to Broadway in 2011 where it received five Tony Award nominations. It is based on the 1992 film, also titled “Sister Act,” starring Whoopi Goldberg.

“This story of music, mishaps and nuns on the run is a joyous and uplifting tale of finding your voice and singing out, with your sisters by your side,” the theatre stated in a news release.

LCCT's production is directed by Luis Castro with music direction by Maryel Arias-Anderson. Zeta Shearill stars as Deloris Van Cartier alongside a cast including Kelly Jo Waggoner as Mother Superior, Bianca Castro as Sister Mary Robert and William Harrold as Monsignor O'Hara.

“Sister Act” will from May 31 through June 16 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Ticketing and other information can be found online at LCCTNM.org.

The theater is located at 313 N. Main Street in downtown Las Cruces.

The production caps the theatre’s 61st season. The amateur company will return on Aug. 9 to open its next season with a production of “Hello Dolly!” directed by Karen Caroe. Other shows announced for next season are “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Clue,” “Rossum’s Universal Robots” and a season finale that has yet to be announced.

Book drive

During the run of “Sister Act,” LCCT will hold a book drive in collaboration with the Children's Reading Alliance. The theatre stated that there is a current need for Spanish-language and bilingual children's books, although books in English are welcome as well. Participants are invited to bring new or “gently used” children's books to the theater and place them in a designated box in the lobby prior to the performance.
